Released in April 2018, the Canon EOS M50 features a 24.1-megapixel APS-C sensor, a dual pixel AF autofocus, Canon’s latest DIGIC 8 Processor, a 2.9-inch fully articulated touch screen with 2.36M-dot OLED electronic viewfinder. It has a maximum ISO sensibility of ISO 51 200.

The Canon EOS M50 burst rates reaches 7.4 frames per second in AF-C mode and 10 fps in AF-S. For video mode, you can shoot in 1080p and reaches 60 frames per second. In terms of design, Canon EOS M50 belongs between the M100 and the M5. This hybrid camera is minimalist, compact and light with a weight of about 390g including memory card and Li-ion battery.

So what do the critics think of the Canon EOS M50?

Overall, most reviews say that Canon EOS M50 is a less expensive version of M5 with the addition of Digic 8 processor. It’s also the only non-pro camera to be able to support 4k video. It’s an easy-to-use camera made for beginners but also for a good photographer. EOS M50 gets a good auto mode and a simple interface.

It’s also the first of the Canon M family to use the new CR3 Raw format with the new compact C-Raw option. Canon M50 wireless capabilities with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are really appreciated.

However, you should not get the Canon EOS M50 only for its 4K video or for the longevity of its battery. Also, you will need an adapter ring to use different optics.

Camerajabber.com★★★★★ – ‘Provided you don’t have your heart set on shooting 4K video, the M50 is a great little camera for vloggers and anyone who wants a small camera with a viewfinder paired with a large (APS-C format) sensor. It might not be the Canon’s flagship mirrorless camera, but the technology inside it is the most advanced that Canon has put in a mirrorless model.’

Dpreview.com – 79% (Silver Award) – ‘As a stills camera, the EOS M50 is a solid choice for photographers who want something more advanced than an entry-level camera, without going overboard. Its image quality, improved AF system and wireless connectivity are all impressive, and the new C-Raw format is a nice bonus. If 4K video is what you’re after, the M50 is not the camera for you due to its high crop factor, rolling shutter and mediocre AF performance.’

Digitalcameraworld.com★★★★ – ‘The Canon EOS M50 packs a lot of tech into its compact body, and the fact it has a viewfinder – when so many similarly priced mirrorless cameras don’t – is a big selling point. The retracting 15-45mm kit lens, however, is a little awkward to use, and the 4K video mode has some unexpected limitations. Nevertheless, this is a big step in the right direction for Canon’s EOS M series.’

Ephotozine.com★★★★½

Pcmag.com – 3.5/5 (GOOD) – ‘The Canon EOS M50 is the company’s first affordable camera with 4K, but there are better mirrorless options out there for video.’

Photographyblog.com – 3.5/5

Trustedreviews.com★★★★

Thephoblographer.com – 4/5 (Not Bad, But Not Fantastic) – ‘The Canon M50 is a decent camera, but it continues to show me that some of their mirrorless offerings are a bit of a mess. There’s the silent shutter mode that makes no sense, the sensor is more or less what they’ve had for years in the APS-C world, and the autofocus isn’t that fantastic. But it’s a step forward from what Canon has been doing for years. Additionally, it simply feels great in the hand and has great battery life.’

Techradar.com★★★★

Tomsguide.com★★★½ – ‘Consider it. The Canon EOS M50 offers novices and enthusiasts a lot to like, but it’s pricey and will need more Canon lenses to make it a truly full-fledged mirrorless system.’
