Sony A7 III reviews roundup: Should you buy it in 2021?

Here’s a roundup of all the Sony A7 III reviews, ratings and impressions from the web. Discover its strengths and weaknesses here!

Released in April 2018, the Sony a7 III features a 24MP full frame BSI CMOS sensor with a Bionz X image processor, a 693-point phase-detection AFand425-point contrast-detect autofocus, a 5-axis In-body image stabilization, a 2.36M dots viewfinder, and a 3” 0.9 dots tilting touchscreen.

The camera can snap in JPG and RAW format, with a burst at up to 10 fps in continuous mode. It records videos in 1080p at up to 120 fps or in 4K at up to 24fps. Recordings are saved on a dual SD card slot, one UHS-I compatible, and the other UHS-II compatible. The a7 III has a Wi-Fi, NFC, and Bluetooth connectivity for remote control operations. The Z type battery can last up to 720 shots. The camera body, with the memory cards and its battery weighs 650g.

So what do the critics think of the Sony A7 III?

Overall most reviews say that the Sony a7 III is a very powerful full-frame mirrorless camera and a strong update on its predecessors. The image quality is excellent, both in photo and video. The stabilization is great, and the autofocus is very competent, though less performing in video mode. The battery life is one of the best in the market.

The camera is fast enough for sport photography and has a great dynamic range for low light settings or landscape photography. The control dials are a bit small and inconvenient at times though. The weatherproofing is also not entirely efficient. Sold for a fair price, this versatile camera is a solid option for serious artists and professionals alike.

Websites Reviews

Cameralabs.com★★★★½ (Highly recommended) – ‘It is one of the most capable, impressively featured and best value full-frame cameras for the money, and one I can Highly Recommend.’

Dpreview.com – 89% (Gold Award) – ‘The Sony a7 III is a well-priced, well-rounded camera suitable for all kinds of photography. Twenty-four megapixels of resolution is more than sufficient for most tasks, and the 693-point autofocus system and 10 frames-per-second burst speed help the a7 III keep up with fast action. Video quality and feature set is another strong point, though some operational lag, a slightly low-resolution viewfinder and unintuitive video autofocus may turn off some users.’

Digitalcameraworld.com★★★★½ (Recommended) – ‘The Sony A7 III is far from new, being launched back in February 2018, but it’s still a leading contender amongst affordable full frame cameras. Its specifications make it a terrific all-rounder, both for stills photography and video. Its handling and control layout aren’t perfect, and other cameras might grab the headlines in one area or another, but few are so consistently capable across such a wide range of disciplines.’

Engadget.com – 92/100

Ephotozine.com★★★★★ (Editor’s choice) – ‘In terms of this camera being a “basic” model, the Sony Alpha A7 Mark III is hardly what we’d call “basic” – and quite easily makes everything else look slower, larger, heavier, less innovative, and more expensive. ‘

Expertreviews.co.uk★★★★★ (Best Buy) – ‘Regardless of whether you shoot landscapes, wildlife, travel, sports or portraits, the Sony Alpha 7 III has plenty to offer.’

Pcmag.com★★★★★ (Outstanding) – ‘The Sony a7 III is an entry-level full-frame camera that goes well beyond the basics in features, with excellent image quality, 10fps subject tracking, and 4K video capture.’

Photographyblog.com★★★★★ (Essential) – ‘The Sony A7 III is quite simply the best camera available at its price-point. ‘

Photographylife.com – 4.6/5 (Gold Award)

Photoreview.com.au – 8.9/10 (Editor’s choice)

Trustedreviews.com★★★★½ (Recommended) – ‘Simply put, the Sony A7 III is the finest example of the most affordable full-frame camera on the market. It’s a sensational camera for the money and compliments the ever-evolving Sony A7-series quite brilliantly.’

Techradar.com★★★★★ (Editor’s choice) – ‘The Alpha A7 III is a brilliant camera that ticks a lot of boxes for many photographers. Sony has taken some of the best bits from its flagship Alpha A9 and A7R III, and distilled them into a single camera that offers a fantastic mix of performance and image quality. For the price, there’s nothing that can touch it.’

Theverge.com – 8.5/10 – ‘Menu system could use a complete redesign’
