Sony FE 12-24mm f/4 G reviews roundup: is it worth the price?

What do the critics think of the Sony FE 12-24mm f/4 G?

Overall, most reviews on the web say that the Sony FE 12-24mm f/4 G is truly awesome: it’s compact, easy to handle and delivers unique images. The weight makes it a great travel camera and if you need such a wide view for landscape photography, reporting or architecture, you’ll be very, very pleased. The only real downside is that there’s no filter thread.

Most reviews recommend it.

Alternatives:

If you don’t need to go as wide as 12mm, the 16-35mm f/4 or 16-35mm f/2.8GM are more balanced options instead since they cover a more useful range and you can use a filter on them to protect the front lens, or if you need to add a UV filter.

Most reviews like…

  • Extremely wide field of view
  • Remarkably compact and lightweight for a 12-24mm full-frame lens
  • Excellent build quality (Dust and moisture resistant)
  • Excellent image quality (sharp at every setting)
  • Very good distortion management
  • Very fast and silent autofocus

Most reviews don’t like…

  • Doesn’t accept filters so you always have to be careful not to damage the front lens
  • Considerable vignetting at 12mm
  • No optical image stabilization
  • Suffers a bit from lens flare
  • f/2.8 aperture could be better for night and astro photography
