Panasonic Lumix G9 reviews roundup: Should you buy it?

Here’s a roundup of all the Panasonic Lumix G9 reviews, ratings and impressions from the web. Discover its strengths and weaknesses here!

Released in December 2017, the Panasonic Lumix G9 features a Micro Four Third 20.3MP MFT Live MOS sensor, a 5-axis in-body image stabilization, a 1.04M dots 3” vari-angle touchscreen, a 3.68M dots OLED electronic viewfinder, and a 225-area contrast autofocus.

The camera shoots JPG and RAW photos up to the high resolution of 80MP, with a 20 fps burst in AF mode, or 60 fps in fixed focal. It captures videos in 4K at up to 60 fps in 10-bit 4:2:2. There is a dual UHS-II SD card slot to stock all your recordings. You can control the camera remotely via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The battery can last for around 400 shots, or up to 920 shots in saving mode. It can be charged via USB. The camera weighs 658 g with the battery and both SD cards.

So what do the critics think of the Panasonic Lumix G9?

Overall most reviews say that the Panasonic Lumix G9 is a great all-rounder camera. The on-body controls are intuitive and allow for some quick adjustments on the spot. The burst mode is powerful and very handy for sport photography. The autofocus is fast enough for quick snaps, ideal for street photography. The 4K video mode delivers a good quality though some find it underwhelming.

The stabilization works well in general, but the camera will require a tripod for the high resolution mode. The only real drawback may be its small sensor, not as sharp and bright as some full-frame or even APS-C sensors on the market.

Camerajabber.com★★★★★ – ‘It’s a versatile camera that’s compatible with a wide range of lenses. The 2x focal length conversion factor is attractive for sport and wildlife photography as it enables you to frame the subject more tightly than you might expect, while optics such as the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 7-14mm f/4 ASPH. and Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 8-18mm f/2.8-4 ASPH., which are equivalent to 14-28mm and 16-36mm lenses respectively on a 35mm camera, mean that you don’t have to miss the wide-angle shooting opportunities.’

Cameralabs.com★★★★½ (Highly recommended) – ‘The Lumix G9 is a confident high-performance camera that’s a joy to use. The tough weatherproof body feels great in your hands with excellent controls, there’s an enormous viewfinder image, a fully-articulated touchscreen with an excellent user interface, fast autofocus and burst shooting that can track action, very effective built-in stabilisation, and great image and video quality from the 20 Megapixel Four Thirds sensor that rivals 24 Megapixel APSC sensors at all but the highest sensitivities.’

Dpreview.com – 85% (Silver Award) – ‘The Panasonic G9 is one of the most well-balanced Micro Four Thirds camera to date. Capable of super fast burst speeds, with reliable AF as well as good-looking 4K, this camera can easily handle double duty. It offers outstanding image stabilization, great image quality and tons of customization all packed in a reasonably lightweight, weather-sealed body.’

Digitalcameraworld.com★★★★★ (Gold Award) – ‘The Panasonic G9 is a very fast and effective camera for both 4K video and fast-action sports and wildlife photography. It’s unexpectedly substantial in your hands, which gives you a good grip, especially with longer lenses, and its image quality is very good, despite the smaller MFT sensor. Initially it was quite expensive, but steady price drops have made the Lumix G9 a very tempting buy for enthusiasts and videographers alike.’

While the GH5 still has the edge for serious videographers, as an all-rounder the new G9 is very hard to beat.’
