What do the critics think of the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L is USM?
Overall, the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L is USM is a pretty good all around zoom lens, with a versatile focal length range that offers a lot of shooting possibilities, good ergonomics, a smooth and totally silent autofocus, optical stabilization, weather protection and a constant aperture. More important, image quality is constant in the center at all focal lengths.
Of course, with a zoom like this you will have to make compromises: it’s quite heavey, and since the aperture is capped at f/4 you won’t get the ultimate bokeh.
To put it simply, there’s not much to blame it for and if you’re looking for a convenient travel zoom, you should get this one.

Digitalcameraworld.com – ★★★★½ (‘While it’s a tad pricey for a zoom lens, the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is a great performer that pairs perfectly with the EOS R. It offers the stabilisation (five stops of it) that the body lacks and the new Control ring is a revelation. The lens is relatively compact and lightweight, offers impressive sharpness and is weather sealed – in all, a great complement to Canon’s new mirrorless system.’)
Pcmag.com – 4/5 – Excellent – (‘For first-time Canon buyers intrigued by the new mirrorless system, it’s a solid introduction—a well-made zoom with a very useful range, strong close-up capability, and sharp optics. It’s not perfectly corrected for distortion, and doesn’t have the head-turning f/2 design of the RF 28-70mm, but not everyone wants a three-pound, $3,000 lens as their everyday zoom.’)
Photographyblog.com – ★★★★½ Highly recommended (‘Despite the price-tag, we can still strongly recommend the new Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM as a solidly built, versatile standard zoom lens that delivers superb image quality.’)
Thephoblographer.com – 4/5 – (‘I think that the Canon RF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM is a great lens. Considering that this used to be my bread and butter lens for years when I was a DSLR owner, I’m pleasantly content with the latest version. It’s almost impossible to get a blurry shot due to camera shake. In fact, I pretty much never got one. Then there is the weather sealing, the fast focus, etc. I can’t really fault the Canon RF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM.’)
Ephotozine.com – ✪✪✪✪½ Highly Recommended – (‘If we look at this just as a lens for a camera system then the cost is about right and the performance is excellent. So, for users of this system this is a very fine standard zoom and in fact pretty much the only choice at the moment. It absolutely delivers the goods. If we look at this as part of a new mirrorless system and ask is it good value for money compared to the current DSLR systems, then that is quite a different equation to balance. Weight and bulk are not particularly reduced, so any advantage is probably in terms of silent, mirror-free and therefore vibration free operation. Of course individuals will prefer the handling of one or the other and buy accordingly. Whatever our requirements are though, one thing is certain and that is that this is a very, very fine lens and Highly Recommended.’)
Photoreview.com.au – 9/10 – Editor’s choice (‘Other features arguing in favour of this lens are its relatively compact size and light weight as well as its versatility, which will make it appealing to travellers as well as photographers embarking on their first steps towards building a full-frame mirrorless system. In essence, it’s a very appealing, general-purpose walkaround lens.’)
