The best lenses for Canon EOS T6 (1300D)

What lens to get for your Canon EOS T6 (1300D)?

Released in April 2016, the Canon EOS T6 (also know as 1300D) is an entry-level SLR with an 18MP APS-C sensor, among the best-selling SLR cameras on the market. Ideal to start in photography thanks to simplified menus for novices, it allows you to obtain very beautiful images as long as you have the right lens. Its video mode is rather limited since it allows you to do Full HD at only 30 fps. However, it costs less than 500$. Combined with one of the lenses presented in this article, you will obtain photos of much higher quality than those obtained if you simply use the 18-55mm lens often sold in kit form with the T6/1300D.

Here is a selection of the best lenses compatible with the Canon EOS T6/1300D for travel, portrait and landscape photography.

Some abbreviations to know:

You will notice when you read the names of each objective some rather complicated abbreviations… some tips to help you better understand all this:

EF (Electronic Focus): means that the lens is equipped with an EF mount compatible with all Canon SLR cameras, both those with an APS-C sensor (such as the Canon EOS 1300D) and those with a full-format 24x36mm sensor (such as the Canon 6D). Warning, when you use an EF lens on an APS-C camera, the focal length will be different: you will have to multiply by 1.6 to obtain the equivalent focal length (a 50mm EF lens will be equivalent to 80mm on APS-C).

EF-S (Short Back Focus): Designed exclusively for Canon EOS SLR cameras equipped with an APS-C sensor, EF-S-mount lenses cannot be used on a full-size SLR. However, since they are optimized for APS-C sensors, they are generally lighter, more compact and less expensive than those in the EF range.

STM (Stepping Motor): a special motor integrated into the lens, optimized for video and allowing a smooth and silent autofocus.

IS (Image Stabilizer): means that the lens incorporates an optical image stabilizer that corrects unwanted camera vibration, allowing you to get sharp pictures without the need for a tripod.

Sigma 17-50 mm f/2.8

what lenses for Canon EOS 1300D

Weight: 570 g
Filter size: 77 mm

A very good lens for the Canon EOS T6/1300D, which will be useful for those who only want to take one lens with them when travelling. This 17-50mm from Sigma offers much better performance than the 18-55mm sold in kit, it allows you to frame from landscape to portrait and will therefore be very flexible when travelling.

In addition, it has a fixed aperture of f/2.8 over the entire focal range, which allows good images to be obtained even in low light conditions. Canon also sells a 17-55mm f/2.8 but it costs twice as much and its performance are not necessarily better… Be careful, when you buy the Sigma 17-50mm on Amazon.com remember to select the Canon frame (Sigma offers the choice between Sony, Nikon… don’t be mistaken!).

Canon EF-S 10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM

Canon EOS T6 which lensWeight: 240 g
Filter size: 67 mm

It’s one of the cheapest wide angle SLR cameras on Amazon.com (less than 300$). It offers absolutely correct performance in a very compact and lightweight gauge (only 240g!), and it even has integrated optical stabilization.

In short, it is an ultra wide angle lens ideal if you want to take landscape or architectural photos with your Canon T6/1300D.

Canon EF-S 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 IS STM

Canon EOS T6 compatible lensesWeight: 375 g
Filter size: 58 mm

A very good zoom that will be an ideal complement for your basic lens or a fixed focal length: among its advantages, it is relatively light, compact and allows you to make beautiful images thanks to the integrated optical stabilization that allows you to take pictures by hand without the need for a tripod. For the disadvantages: it is sold without a sun visor or cover.

Be careful, you will find on Amazon other Canon compatible zooms which are much cheaper, but they do not have integrated optical stabilization which is essential to take pictures from a distance! This 55-250mm is certainly a little more expensive but at least it is stabilized. If you want to start zoom photography, this is the right lens for your Canon EOS 1300D.
