What lens to get for your Canon EOS M50?

Released in April 2018, the Canon EOS M50 is an entry-level hybrid camera for the general public, with a 24.1-megapixel APS-C sensor, similar to that of the Canon 80D.

About the features: it has a latest generation Digic 8 processor, an Oled electronic viewfinder and a 4K video mode and full HD. It also benefits from a new C-RAW format that reduces the weight of images while maintaining good quality. Its 7.5 cm screen is articulated at 180 ° and touch, which makes it a good tool if you want to make vlog videos for Youtube, especially since it has an external microphone port and a very efficient system. Dual Pixel AF autofocus from Canon.

It does not have 4K, and another negative point, the 4K video suffers from a large cropping and a roll effect during movement of the device. Too bad also that it is not possible to recharge the battery via a USB charger, and the autonomy of it is relatively low (it will certainly buy a second). Finally, it does not have stabilization on 5 axes and is not tropicalized.

Let’s still talk about the positives: in the photo he is doing really well, its grip is very simple, it is sold at a fair price and the reduced size of the device makes it easy and pleasant to carry on a trip (397g).

Sold alone or with the 15-45mm, the choice of a lens will be according to the style of photo you want to do: landscape, portrait, macro … To help you choose, here is a selection of the best lenses compatible with the Canon EOS M50. Canon’s EF-M range is currently very limited, but it is hoped that many more lenses will be available in the coming months and years.

1. Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM

Weight: 130 g
Filter diameter: 49 mm
Full Frame Equivalent: 24-72 mm

If you have not already had a kit with the Canon M50, the 15-45mm f / 3.5-6.3 is also sold separately and can be interesting if you are looking for a versatile lens, equivalent to a 24-72mm on a device with full-size sensor. With its retractable design it is compact enough to be carried everywhere, but it is not a goal that can be described as ‘pancake’. To use it, it’s quite simple: just push a notch and turn the zoom ring. It can waste precious seconds, but it’s like that …

It is far from perfect in terms of image quality, with a lot of distortion, vignetting and its aperture is f / 6.3 at the end of the race, but it remains very correct for a goal of this type and in good light conditions it does a good job, helped mostly by the integrated stabilization that compensates for the small aperture. The rendering of the image is also quite clear in the center. From the point of view of the quality of manufacture, it is all plastic and that’s what makes it so light, but it turns out relatively solid. It will interest especially beginners and those who would like to make video, who will appreciate its silent and fluid autofocus (thanks STM technology which allows beautiful transitions from one subject to another).

2. Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM

Weight: 105 g
Filter diameter: 43 mm
Full Frame Equivalent: 35 mm

This pancake-type lens has a standard focal length identical to a 35mm on a full format, and therefore offers a rendering similar to what the human eye sees. In other words, it is very versatile and can be used in different types of situations, whether to portrait or photo reportage as landscape. Its big advantage is especially its size and weight (it’s the lightest of this selection), which makes it super convenient to take on a trip.

Another positive point, its f / 2 aperture makes it possible to obtain a beautiful background blur and make beautiful photos even when there is little light. The rendering of the photos is clear, with a beautiful contrast and rendering colors. Some caveats however: it is not stabilized, and the visor is not included in the box.

Given the results it offers in terms of image, it is certainly one of the best lenses compatible with the Canon M50, and an excellent choice if you want a complementary lens to the basic one, both incredibly compact and simple to use.

3. Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM

Weight: 130 g
Filter diameter: 43 mm
Full Frame Equivalent: 45 mm

Specifically designed for macro enthusiasts (flower photos, insects and close-ups), the Canon EF-M 28mm f / 3.5 Macro IS STM is currently the only lens of this type available for the Canon M50 (at less use an adapter). Equivalent to a 45 mm on a full format, without being phenomenal it offers very good results in terms of image, it is very light and its focus distance is 30mm. It allows to obtain very detailed images, with a very natural color rendering and little distortion. Too bad the aperture is only f / 3.5.

It is stabilized, which is particularly useful for macro. It has a rather innovative feature: it includes two LEDs integrated in the front of the lens that help not project shadows created by the lens by illuminating the subject, and choosing the intensity level of lighting, either to the right or to the left. Autofocus is quiet and can be used manually instantly, if needed.

In short, it’s a good value for money, and a good choice for the M50 if you want to get started in the picture very closely (but it can also be used to make portraits!).

4. Samyang 50mm f/1.2 AS UMC CS

Weight: 368 g
Filter diameter: 62 mm
Full Frame Equivalent: 75 mm

At present, this is the only alternative available to make portrait photography on your Canon M50 without having to use a Canon EF Lens Adapter. Well, it’s a manual focus lens, but it’s not complicated once you get the hang of it. If you agree to ignore an autofocus, this Samyang 50mm f / 1.2 offers a remarkable image quality, with a crazy bokeh and incredible sharpness. Its large f / 1.2 aperture also allows it to be used in low light.

This lens is not for everyone, but if you take the time to get used to the manual focus, it will allow you to make phenomenal images.

5. Canon EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM

Weight: 220 g
Filter diameter: 55 mm
Full Frame Equivalent: 18-35 mm

For lovers of wide angle, the 11-22mm is very practical for architectural photography or landscape, but also if you plan to use your Canon M50 as a vlogging camera. Very solid and compact, it benefits from STM technology and is stabilized (remember to update the firmware of its M50!). It offers very good photos overall, with a lot of detail from one corner of the image to the other. There is a bit of distortion but nothing really bad, and the modest aperture of f / 4-5.6 does not allow miracles in low light. The minimum focusing distance is 15 cm and allows you to get very close to the subject. Namely that the lens is retractable and it gets longer during use.

In conclusion, it is the objective to possess if you make the photo while traveling or want to make videos on Youtube.

6. Canon EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM

Weight: 300 g
Filter diameter: 55 mm
Full Frame Equivalent: 29-240 mm

The ideal tool if you do not want to bother with several lenses for your Canon M50, even if it will make some compromises. It offers a very wide focal range equivalent to 29-240mm on a full format, and benefits from the STM engine and integrated image stabilization. As always with this type of lens, the aperture is far from phenomenal but we still get a pronounced bokeh effect at f / 3.5. We will not expect miracles in low light, but in daylight and with sufficient brightness results in terms of image quality are more than correct. There is a bit of distortion and soft corners at 18mm but the image remains overall very clear.

In summary, even if it has some limitations it is a good choice if you do not want to have to change all the lens time and you want above all a versatile lens with a wide variety of focal ranges.

7. Canon EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM

Weight: 260 g
Filter diameter: 52 mm
Full Frame Equivalent: 88-320 mm

A very good complement for a standard lens like the 15-45mm, this Canon EF-M 55-200mm f / 4.5-6.3 IS STM is a telephoto lens that can zoom in on distant subjects. This is also the most powerful zoom currently available for the Canon M50. At the beginning of the race, it can also be used as a portrait lens.

It has built-in stabilization to compensate for camera shake, which is essential when used at 200mm and f / 6.3. STM autofocus technology is fast and accurate in both photo and video on static subjects, but a little less with fast movements, unfortunately.

For a telephoto lens, it is also very compact and lightweight, thanks to its plastic design (it is not tropicalized, be careful with moisture and dust). It’s far from being the best zoom available, but if you want to take pictures with your Canon EOS M50, this is a goal to have in your bag, or even in your pocket because of its compactness.
